Remote Monitoring in Educational Facilities

Remote monitoring automates part of the maintenance requirements for cooling towers, closed loops and boilers for your facility. At Chardon Laboratories, our controllers are set to chemical feed pumps that balance the water levels regularly. In addition to our remote monitoring services, we include electronic reporting for full transparency on your school’s water treatment program.

What Is Remote Water Monitoring?

Remote water quality monitoring uses advanced technology to detect changes in water systems to enable more efficient action. Remote water monitoring can track multiple parameters simultaneously, including water temperature, and provide real-time insights.

Traditional methods of monitoring water quality require professionals to drive to a specific site and conduct manual sampling and testing. This method can only provide a one-time snapshot of your school’s water quality, not accounting for quickly changing conditions.

Instead of waiting days to get results back from a lab, remote water monitoring allows your facility to address quality or contamination issues promptly. For instance, if a leak or system failure occurs, a remote water monitoring system can provide instantaneous alerts to keep your school on track with water and energy efficiency.

Why Use Remote Monitoring for Your School Water Treatment Program?

Choosing a remote water quality monitoring system over manual checks and in-person visits means you can:

  • Detect leaks as they happen.
  • Identify inefficiencies and water-related risks.
  • Maintain your facility’s set baseline for water efficiency.
  • Contribute to environmentally conscious efforts.
  • Access water treatment data immediately.
  • Gain visibility of your water treatment program.
  • Conserve water by reducing the flushing of outlets.
  • Minimize carbon emissions by reducing engineering travel.
  • Reduce operational costs.
  • Intervene before issues escalate.
  • Optimize water usage.
  • Improve compliance.

Another key benefit of remote water monitoring is relying on the latest technology to detect harmful pathogens that are most often found in water, such as Legionella. This bacteria is commonly found in cold water systems and cooling towers.

Everyone at your facility can be at risk of developing a pneumonia-type illness from Legionella called Legionnaires’ disease. This disease can cause flu-like symptoms, lung inflammation and infections. It can easily be transmitted through inhalation, mists of water or aspiration.

Continous water monitoring can detect Legionella in your facility’s water and send out alerts.

Legionella Testing and Remediation

Schools prioritize safety for the staff and their students. At Chardon Laboratories, we offer Legionella mitigation, fast testing and potable/non-potable treatment and flushing services.

1. Mitigation

The first step to protecting water quality is to develop an effective preventative maintenance strategy to minimize the occurrence of a Legionella outbreak and other pathogenic biological agents in your water system. A water management plan sets up the proper procedures for potable water in your educational facility, such as flushing unused bathroom sinks and removing dead legs in piping.

The non-potable water present in cooling towers is susceptible to Legionella contaminants from the outside air, which can easily grow without ongoing water treatment and system maintenance.

2. Fast Testing

If our monitoring system indicates the presence of Legionella, our staff will promptly schedule Legionella testing at your school. We also offer regular testing to stay ahead of unwanted outbreaks. We perform the testing in multiple locations that are suspected or more likely to have Legionella bacteria present.

3. Remediation

Once a Legionella outbreak occurs, it is necessary to kill the bacteria quickly and effectively. Legionella remediation consists of several response steps to eliminate colonization. At Chardon Labs, we quickly identify all locations where the bacteria are present and then treat the system with the proper biocides. We flush the system for a scheduled interval of time after this is complete.
